Anti-Corruption: Corruption – An Obstacle to Development, 19-21 October

"People are right to be angry. Corruption threatens the well-being of our societies, the future of our children and the health of our planet. It must be fought by all, for all." These words by UN Secretary General António Guterres underline corruption as a serious obstacle to peace and sustainable development. Corruption weakens the level of trust within society and poses a threat to democracy. It also impedes economic development and erodes fundamental services such as healthcare, education and sanitation. People living in poverty and oppression are hardest hit by the harmful impact of corruption. Tackling corruption is thus a precondition for sustainable development and must be a vital part of international development cooperation.

Purpose

The purpose of the course is to strengthen organisational capacity to tackle corruption as an obstacle to development when designing and implementing international development cooperation projects and programmes.

Learning Objectives

After active participation in the course you will be able to

  • exemplify the impact of corruption on sustainable development;
  • explain the impact of corruption on people living in poverty and oppression;
  • suggest how your organisation can integrate the aspect of corruption as an obstacle to development in your work with international development cooperation; and
  • convey insights from the course to colleagues and partners.

Content

The course begins with an introduction to the phenomenon of corruption on 19 October. The workshop focuses on what we mean when we talk about corruption, and the societal and psychological context of corruption. This provides a backdrop to the main theme of the course. There will also be an introduction to how to convey insights from the course to colleagues and partners. This training of trainers element also serves to support participants in their learning process.

The course then continues on 20-21 October with interactive sessions on corruption as an obstacle to development, including case studies. There will be opportunities to participate in experience sharing on best practices with Sida and with other course participants. Alongside this, participants will also continue to reflect on, and work with, the training of trainers element.

Target Group

Staff and field staff within Swedish government agencies, civil society organisations, universities and the private sector involved in Swedish development cooperation or Swedish humanitarian assistance.

If you are working for a non-Swedish organisation you need to be recommended by your Swedish partner organisation. The training is not targeted at private individuals.

Application

We encourage that several participants (e.g. 2-4) from the same organisation attend the course together, as this increases the probability that what you have learned during the course will have impact on your organisation. You may also want to consider attending the course together with your international partners.

Since sustainable change work requires a certain amount of time investment, it is essential that the participants are willing and have their manager's permission to set aside time for following up on the topic of the course also after the course days.

Participants are advised to attend the full course and adjust other commitments accordingly.

Preliminary Schedule

19 October 08:30-12:30
20-21 October 08:30-15:00

Venue

The course will take place online through a digital platform. You need to have access to a personal computer with a strong internet connection (you should be able to stream video). We recommend using headphones rather than the computer audio, to reduce looping of sound in the mic, background noise and to generally improve the learning experience for all participants.
