Corruption is a major obstacle to development. It is imperative to tackle it in different ways and on a diversity of arenas: By promoting integrity in our own organisations, by counteracting corruption in projects and programmes, and through the integration of anti-corruption as a goal or perspective in international development cooperation. This course focuses on how to manage corruption risks and counteract corruption in projects and programmes.
Purpose
The purpose of this basic level course is to strengthen organisational capacity to manage risks of corruption as well as detect signs of corruption and deal with suspected corruption within the context of international development cooperation.
Learning Objectives
After active participation in the course you will be able to:
- Outline different approaches to managing risks of corruption
- Identify signs of corrupt practices
- Present an outline of how a corruption investigation may be conducted
- Discuss how the fight against corruption affects people living in poverty and oppression.
Content
The course begins with an introductory workshop on 17 May: What is corruption and what are the drivers of corruption? This is a joint workshop with the course Anti-Corruption: Corruption – An Obstacle to Development. The course continues on 19-20 May with interactive sessions, including case studies, on risk, detection and investigation. There will be opportunities to participate in experience sharing on best practices with Sida and with other course participants. The two main course days also include a short workshop where participants get the opportunity to design a brief presentation on takeaways from the course relevant to their organisation. This presentation may then be used when discussing how to implement lessons learned with colleagues and partners.
Target Group
Staff and field staff within Swedish government agencies, civil society organisations, universities and the private sector involved in Swedish development cooperation or Swedish humanitarian assistance.
The training is not targeted at private individuals.
If you are working for a non-Swedish organisation you need to be recommended by your Swedish partner organisation.
Application
We encourage that several participants (e.g. 2-4) from the same organisation attend the course together, as this increases the probability that what you have learned during the course will have impact on your organisation. You may also want to consider attending the course together with your international partners.
Since sustainable change work requires a certain amount of time investment, it is essential that the participants are willing and have their manager's permission to set aside time for following up on the topic of the course also after the course days.
Participants are advised to attend the full course and adjust other commitments accordingly.

Venue
The course will take place online through a digital platform. All participants need to have access to a personal computer with a strong internet connection (you should be able to stream video). We recommend using headphones rather than the computer audio, to reduce looping of sound in the mic, background noise and to generally improve the learning experience for all participants.
