People and Planet: Gender, Environment and Climate in the 2030 Agenda, 16-18 March

A global advanced course in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Women, Stockholm Environment Institute and The Swedish Dialogue Institute for Middle East and Northern Africa. The learning event serves to enable the mobilisation of expertise and encourage collective action for a more equal and sustainable planet. Through its concept with regional hubs in Amman, Bangkok, Härnösand and Nairobi, local perspectives, challenges and successful experiences will be part of the learning event using digital tools to facilitate a global dialogue.

Purpose

The aim of the learning event is to deepen participants’ knowledge and understanding of the nexus of environment, climate and gender. The global learning experience also serves to facilitate new innovative local, regional and global partnerships, enabling mobilisation and collective action for a more sustainable planet through a gender-based approach.

Learning Objectives
After active participation in the learning event, you will be able to:
  • Explain linkages between gender and a healthy environment
  • Identify methods to effectively integrate gender perspectives in environmental programmes, policies and advocacy
  • Suggest how the organisation’s programmes and projects may be improved by integrating gender-based approaches in environmental programmes, policies and advocacy relating to environment and climate change.

Content
The 2030 Agenda can only be achieved by engaging and empowering stakeholders, mobilising partnerships and engaging untapped innovative approaches. The equal participation and opportunities for women and men are key factors in eradicating poverty, improving people’s lives as well as protecting the environment and thus achieving sustainable development. Also, in the midst of a global pandemic where shrinking democratic space and violation of rights is a fact, looking at the climate emergency through a gender lens is increasingly important to enable transformative and sustainable change.

Target Group
Desk officers, programme managers, policy advisers, heads of section and heads of offices within civil society organisations, government agencies, UN agencies, academia and the private sector, involved in Swedish development cooperation and Swedish humanitarian assistance.

If your organisation is not working in direct partnership with Sida, a recommendation by UNEP, UN Women, Stockholm Environment Institute and The Swedish Dialogue Institute for the Middle East and Northern Africa, or a partner organisation that works within Swedish development cooperation is needed.

The training is not targeted at private individuals.

Application
The learning event is open for participants nominated by Sida’s partner and individual applications will not be considered. We encourage partner to nominate 2 participants from each organisation. Sida and its co-organisers (UNEP, UN Women, Stockholm Environment Institute and The Swedish Dialogue Institute for Middle East and Northern Africa) reserves the final right to select participants through dialogue with its partner organisations.

The format of the learning event will be constituted by regional ‘Learning Hubs’. The Learning Hub-format recognises that the implementation of the 2030 Agenda needs to be local, regional as well as global, and will enable networking and policy dialogue in a regional context in coordinated time zones.

For international partners, we will open up for an opportunity to participate from the following Learning Hubs: Amman/Jordan, Bangkok/Thailand and Nairobi/Kenya. In Sweden the Learning Hub will be facilitated from Härnösand. Apply to the specific Hub you wish to attend from.

Maximum number of participants
120 participants (approximately 30 people per Regional Hub). Partners can only nominate participants to the Regional Hub where their program/projects are implemented).

Venue
The global learning event is a digital event and will take place online through a digital platform. Participants need to have access to a personal computer with a strong internet connection (you should be able to stream video). We recommend participants using headphones rather than the computer audio, to reduce looping of sound in the mic, background noise and to generally improve the learning experience for all participants.
